DBQ Essay

There were both negative and positive aspects to imperialism. Europeans thought that without them controlling the country that the natives would go crazy and just start a civil war. But the natives don't want the Europeans to control them because they are taking advantage. Europeans now thing that because they control a piece of land that they can control more and take advantage to all the "uncivilized" people.
There were a lot of negative aspects that the Europeans did to the natives. Once the Europeans took over a foreign land, they started to make laws that affected the Muslim and Hindu. They thought very low of these people. They thought that the natives could not do anything without the help of civilized people(which were the Europeans). The Europeans took all the higher places in every department of government. No matter how high place the natives were in the cast system,to the Europeans they did not know anything. (Doc #2) In document 7, it says that the Europeans have committed a crime to the people. They have ran the country for so long and did not bother to teach them how to keep a strong central government. so now they thing that they will have no responsibility on their country.
There were also positive things that imperialism bought. It helped other country's get into shape. It helped their economy grow with the massive trade and factories. "They develop the territory by building roads, canals, railways, and telegraphs. The progressive nations can establish schools and newspapers for the people of the colonies. They can also give these people the benefit of other blessings of civilization which they have not the means of creating themselves." says O.P. Austin(Doc #1) They helped modernize India and other imperialized country's. An Indian reporter says that the Englishmen have introduced Western education to India. This has brought an ancient and civilized nation in touch with modern thought, modern sciences, and modern life. (Doc #3)
During these times that Britain was imperializing other countries, this bought positive and negatives to this so called "uncivilized" countries. I think that it was an even thing between the good and the bad, because once they did a good thing a bad thing would come behind it.
For example, they boycotted salt (which was a good thing because they wont have to buy British salt) and then the British locked the factory down because of this.
